Who we are
GoRevise is an online revision tool for students preparing for GCSE and other school examinations. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it. For any questions or data requests, contact us at hello@gorevise.uk.
GoRevise is intended for GCSE-aged students. If you are under 13, you need a parent or guardian's permission to create an account and use GoRevise.
What data we collect
- Account data: your email address, optional first name, and a hashed (not readable) version of your password.
- Session and progress data: the subjects and topics you revise, your answers to questions, AI-generated marks and feedback, and session timestamps.
- Usage data: your last login date and general app activity used to calculate streaks and progress.
- Performance profile: we track your estimated ability per topic, based on your past scores, so we can serve you questions at a suitable difficulty rather than the same fixed level for everyone. This is used only to run the service for you — it is not shared, and not used to make decisions about you outside the app.
- Uploaded content: if you use the "My notes" feature, the text extracted from your uploaded files is stored to generate personalised questions for your account only.
- How you found us: if you arrive via one of our ad links, we note which one (e.g. "TikTok"). This is just so we know which of our own ads and channels are working — it isn't used to track you around the web.
- Question reports: if you use the "report a problem with this question" form, we collect what you wrote and, only if you choose to give them, your name and email. No account is created or required. We use this to review the question and, if you gave an email, to follow up with you about it.
We do not collect payment card details or location data. We do not use advertising cookies or third-party ad-tracking.
Why we collect it and our lawful basis
UK data protection law says we need a valid reason ("lawful basis") for every piece of data we collect. Here's ours, in plain terms:
- To provide the service (this is called "contract performance" — basically, data we need to actually run the app for you): account data is needed to create and maintain your account. Session and progress data is needed to mark your answers, show your progress, and generate personalised questions and difficulty levels.
- Legitimate interest (a reasonable business reason that doesn't override your rights): your first name (if provided) is used to personalise your experience (e.g. "Welcome back, Alex"). You can remove it at any time from your account page.
- Platform improvement (legitimate interest): anonymised, aggregated answer data is used to understand question difficulty, identify common misconceptions, and improve the quality of questions and AI marking across the platform. This data cannot be linked back to you.
- Knowing which ads work (legitimate interest): your signup source helps us see whether our ads and channels are actually reaching people, so we don't waste money on ones that don't. Never used to build a profile of you beyond that.
- Transactional emails (contract performance): we send emails for password resets and account-related notifications. You cannot opt out of these as they are necessary for account security.
- Question reports (legitimate interest): reviewing reported questions and following up with the people who reported them helps us keep question quality high. Reporting is optional and doesn't require an account.
How long we keep your data
We keep your account and progress data for as long as your account is active. If you request deletion of your account, we will remove your personal data within 30 days. Anonymised, aggregated statistics (e.g. topic difficulty trends) may be retained indefinitely as they cannot identify you.
Uploaded notes: files you upload via the "My notes" feature, and the questions generated from them, are retained for a maximum of 12 months from the date of upload. You can delete any upload at any time from the My notes page — this permanently removes the uploaded content and all questions generated from it. Your notes are never used to generate questions for any other user, and they are never shared with teachers or third parties.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. We share data only as described below.
Service providers
The following third parties process data solely to operate GoRevise:
- Railway — cloud hosting and database storage (servers in the EU/US)
- Anthropic — AI model provider used to generate questions and mark answers. Your answers and question text are sent to Anthropic's API for processing. See Anthropic's privacy policy.
- Resend — transactional email delivery (password resets, account emails)
Registered teachers — anonymised data
Registered teachers on GoRevise may see anonymised student answers, marks, and feedback for questions they review. This is used to assess question quality, improve mark schemes, and help train and calibrate AI marking. Anonymised means your name, email, and any other identifying information are removed before a teacher sees the data. Teachers cannot identify which student submitted a particular answer.
Teachers may see questions and answers from sessions based on uploaded notes, but they will never see the uploaded notes themselves. The content of your uploaded files is only ever used to generate questions for your own account.
Teachers from your school or institution — identified data
Your non-anonymised answers and progress data will only be shared with teachers from your own school or educational institution if you give your explicit permission. We will ask for this permission separately and clearly — it will never be implied by your use of the platform. You can withdraw this permission at any time by contacting us at hello@gorevise.uk.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data (you can update your name and email yourself on the account page)
- Request deletion of your account and personal data
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest (see above)
- Request a copy of your data in a portable format (a file you could take to another service)
To exercise any of these rights, email hello@gorevise.uk. We will respond within 30 days.
Cookies and analytics
GoRevise uses a single session cookie to keep you logged in. This cookie is strictly necessary for the app to work. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not currently use any website analytics tool.
Changes to this policy
If we make significant changes to this policy, we will update the "last updated" date above. Continued use of GoRevise after a policy change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
